After several months of preparation, the La Marguerite flower festival is here. Today, October 17th dressed magnificently, singing traditional songs in French Creole the La Marguerite feast will be celebrated in the community of Labourie. This festival is one of two which is held yearly. The other, the La Rose Festival was celebrated on August 30th.
The two feasts are based on the celebration of opposing virtues of the Rose and Marguerite flowers. The two societies are structured with a hierarchy of King and Queen. Following the head, the societies emulate a socio – economic structure of a colonial society. It is customary to have a performance of mascaraing princes, princesses, legal, military, police, judges, nurses and soldiers in the festivities. On this day, the festivities begin with a church service, then a parade is taken to the streets after which the ‘grand fete’ is held.
